It took months of subterfuge and cunning, but Lord Premier Tharos finally turned the Green Lantern Corps into the personal army he had always dreamed of. Now he’s out to master the power of the emotional spectrum. But where did Tharos come from? And what does a glimpse into his past tell fans about Tharos’ plans for the future?

In of Green Lantern #13 Backup story “The Patient Blade” by Mark Guggenheim, Matthew Clarke, Matt Harms and Dave Sharpe Lord Premier Thurs reflects on his childhood. He remembers when his planet was still under a monarchy. Tharos also thinks of his father, a duke who introduced Tharos to the ways of high society. He also recalls that his father was a pacifist who never raised his fist at anyone. That is Until Tharos’ father came home one day and beat him up.

But Tharos has learned the value of cunning and the long game.


However, it was not Tharos’ father, but a local criminal named Grund. Grand, like all Durlans, can shape-shift, and after killing Tharos’ father he used his powers to duplicate them. Grund brutally kills the young man to teach him strength and to remind Tharos not to seek revenge against Grund. With a grinding blade he killed the duke Tharos and Tharos threatens to cut Grund’s own throat if he comes after him.

Tharos seeks revenge against Grund, but learns that he is not strong enough to do so. But Tharos has learned the value of cunning and the long game. Years later, when Tharos finally comes under the control of the Green Lantern Corps, he stops a smuggler and discovers his Grandfather in a different form. Tharos gives Grund two options: give himself up and suffer years of intense torture or kill himself with the knife he gave Grand Tharos. Grund kills himself and Tharos keeps the blade as a memento.

Who is Thoros and how did he become the Green Lanterns’ new nemesis?


Tharos is the leading figure in the universe-wide governing body, the United Planets. Although outwardly seen as a kind and caring statesman, Tharos is incredibly corrupt. Early in his career, he secretly worked with the Mongols to curry favor with the warlord. Tharos eventually becomes Lord Premier and his shadowy partnership with Mongul comes to light when Superman tries to liberate Warworld. Thoros even prevented the United Planets from helping Superman in the hopes that Mongul would kill the Man of Steel. and hide the secrets of Tharos.

Fortunately for Thoros, Superman’s actions during the Warworld saga did not expose his complicity. In fact, Tharos gained more power than ever when the Guardians of the Universe disappeared and left the United Planets in charge of the Green Lantern Corps. Unbeknownst to the Lanterns, Tharos had set out to take sole control of the emotional spectrum. After isolating Earth and reassigning the planet’s lanterns, Tharos embarks on his most dastardly plot yet: Blowing up and destroying the DC Universe’s central power battery.

One by one, the various corps fell and their members were either arrested or killed. With each body destroyed, Tharos’ new ‘United Planet’ lanterns were able to channel different light. If that wasn’t bad enough, Tharos was using his underlings and sacrificing their lives in hopes of accessing the mysterious Source Lantern. So far, Tharos has failed. But with both the Green Lantern Corps and the United Planets under his control, Thoros has established himself as the greatest threat to the DC Universe.

Looking back at Tharos’ childhood to see who the Lord Premier of the United Planets really is serves as an effective character study. In more peaceful times, Tharos could have been like his father, a kind man who understood true diplomacy. Instead, Tharos was ultimately transformed by his experience with Grandewho taught Tharos that the only way for someone like him to survive in the world was to be strong and clever enough (not to mention patient).

…He replaced the ruling council of the United Planets with other Durlans, making Tharos virtually untouchable.


Green Lantern has gone up against many different villains in the past, and few have proven to be as big a threat as his greatest nemesis, Sinestro. However, while Sinestro is certainly a force in his own right, Tharos is a much more pressing matter. Sure Sinestro mastered fear and used his self-titled corps to fight the Green Lanterns. But Tharos is much more deceitful. He enters one of the most powerful positions in his neighborhood Green used it to turn the Lantern Corps into his personal army.

Tharos knows how to manipulate systems and people. Without even trying he managed to deceive the corps and turn it into a fascist army. And Tharos is getting worse. In addition to bombing numerous central power batteries throughout the DC Universe, he replaced the ruling council of the United Planets with other Durlans, making Tharos virtually untouchable. Sinestro is an amazing general and knows how to fight the next battle. But Tharos’s life experiences made him One of the most terrifying threats the Green Lanterns have ever faced.


What can Green Lantern do about Thoros?

At this point, there’s not much Hal or his fellow Green Lanterns can do. Hal is fighting for his life on Earth during Amanda Waller’s crusade against metahumans while the Earth Lanterns who haven’t been apprehended evade Tharos’ enforcers. The only way Green Lantern can get out of this is with outside help. Whether that means from the Justice League or even Sinestro (who almost certainly wants to kill Thoros), someone has to step in. If not Green Lantern’s The new enemy can win the battle he is fighting.
