Charlie Benante – the drumming force behind Anthrax and: the panther – has pretty diverse taste when it comes to what he listens to and what he’s influenced by. And of course in everything Benante listens to a heavy dose of heavier music.
in an interview with Consequence, Benante referred to his love Dimu Borgir2001 album Puritan euphoric misanthropy and drumming Nick Barker. Benante He says he remembers hearing the track ‘Blessings Upon The Throne Of Tyranny’ and being completely blown away. Mannersand later explains why Puritan euphoric misanthropy probably appealed to the masses.
“In the early 2000s, when this CD came out, it was one of those moments that made my head spin. Back in the 80s, there was a group that. Ian Scott and I did with two other guys and it was called Stormtroopers of Death. And we had a song called “Milk.” And it was like the first time the blast beat really came out on the record. And I remember that at that time people asked me: “What are you doing there?” What are you doing there?’ And I would try to show and show them. So that whole thing kind of fell apart.
“Later on, black metal bands started to explode. I used to do mostly like a single-leg burst, but then they did it more independently with two legs. so Nick Barkerin particular, he had just mastered it so well. And when I heard Dimu Borgerof [sic] Puritan euphoric misanthropy album, and I heard “Blessings Upon the Throne of Tyranny,” it was one of those moments where I had to get up to the speakers and just ask myself, “What’s going on here?”
“For me, it’s a black metal record that I think the masses can embrace because it’s so well produced. The playing was freaking killer and the songs were great. But of all things Nick Barker shines on that record. His drumming, his delicious fillings just blew me away.”
