Earlier this week, Canadian solo artist and former member of Strapping Young Lad, Devin Townsend, announced that he is performing an orchestral version of his rock opera. The moth In the Netherlands, with the support of the Northern Netherlands Symphony Orchestra. The performance on March 27th at De Oosterpoort in Groningen, NET, sold out quite quickly, and a second performance is scheduled for March 28th at the same venue.

“For his latest project. [Devin Townsend] merged with Symphony Orchestra of the Northern Netherlands and composed The moth,” explains a press release about the performance that was reported PRP:a “rock opera” that he has been working on for years, which represents his lifelong pursuit. The moth tells the story of the human experience from birth to death, comparable to the transformation of a caterpillar into a moth. It symbolizes the human search for meaning and offers perspectives on the fear of death through analogy and narrative. Since then, Townsend has witnessed major musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and: The Phantom of the Opera In the 1970s, he considered this project his calling.

“Moth has been more than a decade in the making,” the release continues, “and Townsend has been building toward it for 30 years. Now he is ready to implement it. He will share the stage at Groningen’s De Oosterpoort with no less than seventy musicians. Symphony Orchestra of the Northern Netherlandsthe sixty-member choir and his own orchestra, which includes Mike Kennelly, Joseph Stevenson, Darby Toddetc James Leach“.

The grace period has already expired, so there is no word on whether more grace periods will be added.
