Kelsey Grammer and Perry Gilpin love filming in front of a live audience

“It’s the biggest job in Hollywood, honestly. It’s always for the audience.”

Frasier and Roz look sad in Frasier Season 2

Screen Rant: What is it like for you to perform in front of a live audience?

Kelsey Grammer: Well, that’s the juice. I mean, why do you do it. It’s the biggest job in Hollywood, to be honest. It’s always for the audience. It’s not art unless there’s a bunch of eyes on it, which isn’t involved. And we get immediate feedback on that. It smells of rust, grease paint, crowded things. It’s instant, and it’s very exciting to do. It is the perfect combination of camera work with live theatre. That’s what I think of all the people who made their living on sitcoms. I think that’s what drives them crazy because it’s the only place that really feels right. It is such a great medium.

Perry Gilpin: Well, you work up to it. The whole goal is to make it presentable to the audience. Something they can enjoy and respond to, especially with comedy. When you do single-camera comedy, no one can respond. You don’t really know what works and what doesn’t, but there you get immediate feedback – or not. But that’s why you do it. They are like the ultimate characters. They’re so happy they’re there, and you can’t wait to show them, and you can’t wait for them to do the scene. Notice it.

Kelsey Grammer: Yes, it is. It’s all for them. It’s all for them.

Kelsey Grammer never thought she’d be back on Frasier before the reboot

“I abandoned it. I was happy. I went on and did some really fun and interesting things.”

Kelsey Grammer as Frasier in Season 2

Screen Rant: When frasier Finally, did you ever think you would return to this role?

Kelsey Grammer: I didn’t think so. I remember having a chat with Jeff Zucker at the end of season 11, and he said, “What do you think? Do you think you can do a few more?” And I said, “Yes, we can do more.” I can because she is as interesting as life. If you’re not bored in life, you’re not really bored playing a character. I think if the character is just in a procedural drama, you might get bored and say, no thanks. I don’t want to do that anymore. But Frasier has many notes, and he plays many notes. He plays for fun. Sad, sad, funny. He touches them all, and it’s always about love. So how can you be bothered with that in life? I mean, that’s life. That’s what we’re here for. Carving our niche in the world of love. To build Eden. To make our garden.

Anyway, I told Jeff, “Yes, we could.” And then Paramount let all the writers go anyway, and so it didn’t happen at the time. So I abandoned it. I was happy. I went and did some really funny stuff and really interesting stuff. Lots of theater and a few film roles that were funny and a bit catchy. And when Roseanne started her show again, which was seven or eight years ago now, right? There was such a great response. And I thought, this is our contemporary. And it’s a format that I, of course, love and people seem ready to respond to it again. We started talking seriously about doing frasier and found some willing ears, some not so willing, and then finally forced it down their throats.

Rose is Perry Gilpin’s favorite character she has ever played

“I always weirdly thought I could play Rose again.”

Frasier laughs with the group in season 2 of Frasier

Screen Rant: Perry, how was it for you to see Rose again?

Perry Gilpin: It’s very funny. It’s a dream. I always wondered if I could play everyday again. I don’t know why and it’s great to see that character again. It’s my favorite character I’ve ever played. I love all the things about her and I love playing her at this age and finding out what’s going on in her life right now. It’s very fun.

There are some letters in Kelsey Grammar that she would love to see back

“We’ve targeted a couple. It’s probably not the smartest thing for me to tell them, but there are some really weird ones.”

Screen Rant: Do you think other characters and friends from the past will return?

Kelsey Grammer: Yeah, we noticed a couple. It’s probably not very smart of me to say them, but there are some really weird ones too. I could probably say this. I just thought of this yesterday. I was in a place in New Jersey called Crystal Springs, very few people know that Kirby has a connection to the character. In the show, Kirby was Gene Smart’s son. And he dated a girl whom Niles and Frasier thought might inherit the Mulvihill wine cellar. The Mulvihill Wine Cellar actually exists in Crystal Springs, so I think I might take Christopher Lloyd and the writers to a dinner there and try to figure out a way to make the Mulvihill Wine Cellar a thing on the show. I don’t know if it’s something that just popped into my head, that won’t spoil anyone’s idea of what the show should be.

I called Chris when I was there, when I actually got there. I called Christopher Lloyd and said, “Why are we talking about Mulvihill Wine Cellars?” Because it is one of the best wine cellars in the world. It’s incredible. This is an amazing story. David Lloyd, his father, used to write for Carson. It’s an hour outside of Manhattan. “I think my dad went there,” Chris said. It was special 50 years ago. It’s really special now. It’s an amazing place. They have everything you can imagine. Every wine from anywhere in the world. I’ve never seen a place like it. Next time you’re in New York, go out and check it out.
