Katy Perry was the guest of honor at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she performed a 10-song medley and accepted the Video Vanguard Award onstage at UBS Arena in Long Island while floating above the stage on wires, Doechy stopped live for Perry’s new single “I’m His, He’s Mine.” for the debut featuring Crystal Waters’ legendary “Gypsy Women (La Da Dee La Da),” before Perry sang “California” to the crowd and “Teenage Dream.” A line of dancers decked out in silver sci-fi styles, drifted behind him.
Perry covered her self-titled single “I Kissed a Girl,” then donned a pair of metallic butterfly wings for her ballad “Firework.” She wrapped things up with “Lifetimes,” the second single from her upcoming album 143:. Watch what happens below.
Perry’s partner Orlando Bloom introduced the pop star and presented her with his Video Vanguard Moon Person. Perry opened his acceptance speech by stating: “I did this on the first day of my period” and thanking MTV for “believing in my queerness” over the years.She also acknowledged the support of the LGBT community and gave a shout out to Bloom and their daughter Daisy.
Perry joins a pantheon of Video Vanguard winners that includes last year’s honoree Shakira, Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, Madonna, Rihanna, Missy Elliott, Britney Spears and more.
Katy Perry made her MTV VMAs debut back in 2009, performing “We Will Rock You” with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. She earned her first three Moon Person trophies in 2011 for her mega-hit “Firework” and the Kanye West collaboration “ET.” Prior to tonight, Perry’s last VMA appearance was in 2017, when she served as master of ceremonies and Nicki Minaj performed “Swish Swish” back.
Perry returned to the pop scene in July with Woman’s World, while also announcing her next studio album, 143:which will be released on September 20. He followed it up with the LP’s second single, “Lifetimes.” 143: will be Perry’s first studio album since its release Smile in 2020.
