In a frank conversation The Surfer’s Journal Sounds podcast, Robert Trujillo shared an unforgettable joining experience Metallica and the overwhelming moment is captured Some kind of monster documentary. As fans may recall, during an early meeting with his new bandmates, Trujillo was awarded a $1 million bonus, which he described as “weird” and “surreal”.
Referring to experience, Trujillo said (as transcribed Blabbermouth“Well, it was weird and it was surreal. I guess I didn’t believe it. It didn’t seem real. It’s funny because you’re never really… It’s there, but it’s not. All of them. says: “Wow, man!” After taxes, it’s a little bit different than a million dollars, I guess I was so exhausted from the job where I was, like, “Okay, that’s good.” But then in my head I’m like, ‘time to get down to business, I’ve got a catalog to learn.’
“And then there was this new album, ‘St. anger‘that they hadn’t even played live yet, because that album was created in the studio. Trujillo remembered “So now I have to learn these songs. And I just saw it, like, “I have a lot of work ahead of me. I’m not going to worry about… I’m not going to think about money I’m not going to mention what’s going on because I’ve got work to do. I remember I didn’t go home for, like, six months, I’d almost go home for a night or two to get some clothes or whatever I needed and bring it back up north, but mostly I moved. San Francisco at that very moment and my life changed forever.”
Trujillo told the hearing process Metallica “And it wasn’t two in a row, it was one, then another, I don’t know, five months, four months, three months later, I don’t remember.”
on time Trujillo was part of Ozzy Osbourneand the transition was not without its complications. He recounted a breakthrough moment when Osborne reached out himself to ask about future tours. Trujillo “When things got more serious after the second audition, it was interesting because I got a call Ozzyetc Ozzy never called me. Do you always hear from someone on the management team or maybe? Sharon: can call – Sharon Osbournehis wife. But Ozzy never called me. And I get this call from him, and he’s like, “Hey, Rob:. Hey, listen, let’s hit the road, man. I am ready. Ozfest. We’re playing, aren’t we? And I’m like, “Yeah.” ‘Because I hadn’t heard Metallica about whether I got the gig yet. So I was excited. ‘Yes, I have to get back to work. ‘Cause he started doing it Black Sabbath then they got back together and everything was rolling around Saturdaywhich is awesome. But I was not working. So I said, “Wow, that’s exciting. I can get back on the road and back to work.”
Just like Trujillo was getting ready for ozfest Metallica They came up with their proposal, putting him in a difficult situation. Lars saying: “Hey, we want you to come up here and we want to talk to you.” So I say OK. They don’t tell me I got the gig. I always think of the worst case scenario. And they’re the kind of guys that will leave you flying out there to tell them you didn’t get the gig. They’re just kind of wired that way. For example, “We just wanted to tell you in person, ’cause we respect you, you didn’t get the gig,” something like that. So I’m going for it. But I’m not sure. Mrs Ozzy had just called me, so I was like, “Wait, this is crazy.” This is weird.”
“So I go up there and, yeah, that’s where the meeting was with the money offer and all that. And again, my head is spinning, for example. “Okay, I have to study 30 years of catalog.” It was just kind of going through a washing machine rinse cycle in my brain. And so, basically, I think now Ozzyand I told them, and I don’t even know why I said this, but I always tried to be faithful Ozzy and: Sharon:; they did so much for me. So I said, “Well, I don’t think I can do those dates.” But when I finish my commitment back Ozzy“Whatever it is, an eight-week run, I’m going to jump on board.” Trujillo recalled
“And I remember Lars “We respect your loyalty. It is very honorable. But this train is leaving, and it’s moving fast, and you need to jump on board and jump with us. I say “Okay”. So I flew home that night and actually went there Sharon: and: Ozzyat the house and meet Sharon: and said: “Yes, I will join Metallica. And it was heavy. Yeah, it was just tough because I think when it’s all said and done, every musician, you’re writing music, you’re composing, you’re performing, so it’s all driven by passion. So it’s hard when you lose a team member. Especially me playing back Ozzy for seven years. So it was hard, but I also felt like I had to be there in person to tell her and tell her. And that’s basically how it went down. There was never any bad vibes… Usually when this has happened in the past it can get pretty ugly with anyone. I mean, you leave the team, and it’s not good. And then, again, as I said, my life changed. All of a sudden I was part of a new family and I was living in a new area and it was just a different existence.”
