Screen Rant Chat with Mena and Crowder about Pippa and Wrigley’s emotional distance, Diana’s infatuation with Stephen and what’s next for their characters tell a lie Season 2.
Crowder had to understand why Diana was going back to Stephen
“It’s one of those things where you’re really blindsided by the bluff.”
Screen Rant: It’s been two years since Season 1 first aired, so how does it feel to be back? What are each of you most excited about heading into Season 2?
Sonia Mena: I am just excited about everyone’s performance. We get to see a lot more of everyone’s characters this season and the cast really kills it. I’m just excited to come along and experience it. I hope it’s fun. We had a lot of fun making it, so I hope you enjoy watching it.
Alicia Crowder: I’m so excited for all the reveals and all the twists. I think that’s one of the things about the show that people really love, and we really doubled down this season. We just keep them coming. I’m just excited about it and seeing everyone’s predictions and how they feel about the different things that are going to happen.
Sonia, we need to talk about what happened with Pippa at the end of last season. He was falsely accused of sending the letter and it really damaged his relationship with Wrigley. How would you describe their relationship going forward?
Sonia Mena: They don’t actually have one at the beginning of the season. They didn’t talk. All his teammates are chasing me. He’s not doing anything about it. It’s pretty rough, and it’s fun to see what happens to them during the season because there aren’t many lows you can go. If you are not Stephen, in this case, there is much less you can go. But when it comes to us, there is nothing. It’s just sad.
Alicia, as far as the college timeline goes, we end season 1 with Stephen and Diana getting back together. Despite everything, why do you feel that he continues to gravitate towards her?
Alicia Crowder: I had to figure that out too. I think he’s actually the smartest person he knows and I think he really values and appreciates that they’re on the same level academically and emotionally, as far as he knows. I think she also thinks it’s one of those classic things that she can fix him.
There are places where she can improve, and I think Diana is really like, “We have the raw material. We can do better than this.” And I think she also really loves him and really cares for him and thinks they’re a great couple and they’re going to have a very successful life together. It’s one of those things where you’re really blindsided by the bluff.
Pippa will struggle to keep things together in Tell Me Lies season 2
“Some really intense stuff happens to him at the beginning of the season that really derails his whole life.”
Moving away from this, another huge shock in the season finale is that Stephen winds up with Lydia. When did you know about the twist?
Alicia Crowder: We’ve probably known about it for a little while, but it’s still interesting to see how they come together. It hasn’t been made clear this season yet, but the little interactions and scenes they have together are really interesting to watch. I think, in the end, Diana is probably happy that he’s not her problem anymore.
Sonia, Pippa explored her sexuality last season. Is this something we’ll continue to see in season 2?
Sonia Mena: Yes and no. I think Pippa starts this moment of curiosity, and at the beginning of the season some really intense things happen to her that really derail her whole life. For most of the season, he’s really just trying to survive and just get through it. We see him later in life and see him fix it, he’s obviously fine, but mostly, we see him trying to put it all together and it’s really hard for him. So we don’t see him running around. a little bit Flickers here and there.
Do you think Pippa, Lucy and Bree are true friends, or is their relationship due to circumstances?
Sonia Mena: I think both could be true. How are they friends? They all lived next to each other/across the hall from each other and of course their relationship has many flaws and complicated, maybe not very good, aspects of their relationship, but we also see moments of them trying to care for each other, trying to help each other. Showing up for, trying to understand each other and maybe not always works out the best. But it certainly has depth, even if it’s sometimes complicated and toxic – a lot of the time.
