Charismatic voice Elizabeth Jaroff launches a Kickstarter campaign to advance vocal research. 100% of funds donated to the Kickstarter will go to The Charismatic Voice Research Fund, a non-profit organization dedicated to vocal research.

You can donate here. And if you’re not sure you know Jarroff and his work, yea, thou dost; is the one who did all the extensive vocal testing Lorna Shore vocalist Will Ramos.

“I thought screaming and roaring were bad for the vocal cords,” he said Jarroff. “Even with eight years of university opera training and a decade of performing, I believed these sounds were harmful. But I was wrong. We were wrong.”

He continued. “Ten years from now, I want to see sound distortion programs at Juilliard. I want classical singers to cross-train with this technique because there is evidence that vocal distortion training can actually improve your high notes.”

Jarroff envisions a future where sound distortions are used to treat mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. The vagus nerve, which connects the vocal folds to various important organs, plays a role in emotional processing. Jarroff believes that engaging the full range of vocal structures, as metal singers do, can lead to advances in mental health therapy.

So who will be tested? The short list is as follows.

  1. Travis Ryan from Heading of cattle
  2. Phil Bozeman from Whitechapel
  3. Mark Garrett from Kardashev and Kardavox Academy (YouTube)
  4. Melissa Bonney from Unlimited ads and: Camelot
  5. Alyssa White-Gluz from Arch Enemy:
  6. Spencer Sotelo from Suburb
  7. Tatiana Shmailuk from ginger
  8. Devin Townsend

The project will be led by top vocal researchers at the University of Utah, with additional experts from around the world. Jarroff He funded most of the initial research himself, but he needs community support to expand the study.

“We’ve had people ask why we use Kickstarter instead of grants. The truth is that rough vocals have become so stigmatized that getting grants has been difficult. But we believe in the power of community to lead this revolution.” Jarroff said:

He continued. “Together we can change the future of vocal science and improve the lives of millions of people. It’s a big deal, and we might as well have fun doing it.”
