The Color Purple’s forthcoming big-screen musical adaptation has gotten a new trailer. Halle Bailey appears as young Nettie in the film, with Taraji P. Henson, H.E.R., Ciara, and Jon Batiste filling out more of the cast. It hits theaters on December 25, take a look below.
Blitz Bazawule directed the update of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel, adapted from the version of The Color Purple that ran on Broadway from 2005 to 2008. Fantasia Barrino became the first American Idol winner to make it to Broadway when she starred as Celie in 2007, and she reprises her role on-screen. Steven Spielberg and Quincy Jones, who co-produced the 1985 movie (with Spielberg directing), have co-produced the new adaptation, along with Oprah Winfrey, who had her first film role in The Color Purple as Sofia.
